Christmas in the Cotswolds 2026 – What’s On & Where to Go
Christmas in the Cotswolds brings twinkling high streets, crackling pub fires, festive markets and spectacular light trails. Christmas in the Cotswolds 2026 – What’s On & Where to Go gives our local insight into the experiences worth planning around.

1. Big ticket Christmas light trails
If you book just one evening event, choose the one that suits your route and interests. Don’t try to cram several trails into one night - winter daylight fades early and timed entry matters.
Christmas at Blenheim Palace | 13 November 2026–3 January 2027
Blenheim Palace goes all in for Christmas. For 2026, Cinderella replaces the 2025 Wizard of Oz theme inside the Palace, with decorated State Rooms telling the story. Outside, the illuminated trail, Great Skate and Great Court Christmas Market make this an immersive festive outing. The Christmas Market runs 13 November - 20 December 2026, shorter than the overall Christmas season.
Why go? This is the biggest all-round Christmas experience on our Oxfordshire side of the Cotswolds: palace interiors, lights, shopping and food in one place.
Our local tip: Reserve your palace and trail time slots and parking well in advance.
Tickets for some attractions are separate, so check exactly what your package includes. Dogs are restricted: check the organiser’s current rules.

Christmas at Westonbirt Arboretum | 27 November–31 December 2026, selected evenings
Westonbirt transforms its trees into an illuminated winter trail with new installations alongside returning favourites, including the Christmas Cathedral, Fire Garden and Sea of Light. It is a lovely choice for families or anyone who prefers a woodland experience to a grand palace.
Why go? A very different atmosphere from Blenheim - more forest, light and walking under the trees.
Our local tip: entry is timed and on selected nights only. Parking must be pre-booked, and the evening trail does not include ordinary daytime arboretum admission. Dress warmly and wear sensible shoes.

Spectacle of Light at Sudeley Castle | 20 November–30 December 2026, selected evenings
This year’s Sudeley Castle theme is Alice’s Amazing Adventures in Wonderland, replacing 2025’s Arthurian story. Follow the illuminated route through castle gardens and ruins, with familiar Wonderland characters, winter warmers and the
romance of Sudeley after dark.
Why go? History and storytelling in a magical castle setting, particularly appealing for families.
Our local tip: Event dates are selected nights, not every night. Book a timed admission and arrive with a little margin. Pets are not permitted except for assistance dogs.

Enchanted Garden by Night, Painswick Rococo Garden | 27 November 2026–2 January 2027
For something more intimate, Painswick Rococo Garden has an evening garden of glowing paths, woodland creatures and twinkling surprises. The 2026 experience includes new illuminated woodland scenes and an expanded miniature village.
Why go? Smaller scale, atmospheric and especially lovely for couples, with time for a warming drink.
Our local tip: Allow around two hours. The garden has some uneven historic paths, best to check accessibility before booking. Unlike some bigger trails, dogs on leads are welcome according to the organiser’s published information.

2. Christmas markets and late night shopping
Cirencester Advent Market and lights | 28–29 November 2026
Cirencester’s historic market town centre fills with seasonal stalls, independent makers, food and festive atmosphere. The Advent Market and light switch-on run on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 November. A separate Christmas Market
follows on 5–6 December, with further gift market dates during the season.
Our local tip: Visit earlier in the day if you prefer less crowding. Do not assume every festive stall operates every day of December.
Chipping Campden Christmas Market | 5 December 2026
One of the most attractive high streets in England makes a lovely setting for a Christmas market. The 2026 event is advertised for Saturday 5 December, noon to 5pm, with stalls in the High Street, Market Square and Town Hall.
Our local tip: Chipping Campden is a compact village centre; plan parking ahead rather than expecting to stop outside the market.
Broadway late-night shopping | 27 November and 4 December 2026
Broadway is beautiful all year, but its late night shopping evenings are particularly festive. Shops stay open 4:30–8:30pm, with music, seasonal treats and the glow of the High Street.
Why go? One of the best places to enjoy the picture-postcard English village Christmas atmosphere without booking a grand attraction.
Our local tip: Pick one Broadway shopping evening and enjoy it at a leisurely pace rather than rushing between multiple towns.

Moreton-in-Marsh, Cheltenham and other markets | Check local calendars
Moreton-in-Marsh and Cheltenham also host festive markets and seasonal shopping. However, public listings for Moreton-in-Marsh currently contain a date inconsistency (one 2026 listing says 28 December while describing a lights
switch-on). We are deliberately not publishing a precise Moreton date until the organiser confirms it.

3. Family-friendly festive fun
Christmas on the Farm, Cotswold Farm Park | 27 November–23 December 2026
On selected dates Adam Henson’s Cotswold Farm Park is an excellent choice with children. Its Christmas on the Farm experience includes meeting Father Christmas, a present room, teddy bear making and gingerbread decorating. Scheduled sessions are 27–29 November, 4–6 December, 11–13 December and daily 17–23 December 2026.
Our local tip: Choose a grotto slot first and book tickets before arranging other stops; leave extra time for farm activities.

Steam trains and Santa
Heritage railways around the wider Cotswolds often host Santa-themed train trips. They are popular with families, but departures and operating dates differ by railway. Check the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway’s official Christmas schedule before writing a specific train into your day.
4. Cosy villages, pubs and festive food
Not every Christmas highlight needs a ticket. Some of the best moments are simple: a walk through a stone village at dusk, an independent shop, a roaring fire and a satisfying English pub lunch.
Broadway and Chipping Campden: Festive streets, independent shops and a welcoming village atmosphere.
Bourton-on-the-Water: The famous river setting is striking at Christmas, but can be crowded at peak times. Visit outside the busiest hours if you can.
The Bull, Charlbury: A memorable pub lunch option where reservations are wise during December.
The Farmer’s Dog: Another popular country pub destination for visitors interested in Clarkson’s Farm; book ahead and do not assume walk-in availability.
Our local tip: For American visitors, a British Christmas lunch does not have to mean the biggest or most famous pub. A relaxed booking with time to enjoy the village afterwards is often a better experience.
5. Planning your Christmas trip to the Cotswolds
Book the headline attractions and timed evening trails before organising the rest of the itinerary.
Check selected operating dates - a date range does not mean an event runs every day.
Allow time for short December daylight, winter weather, parking and busy market town roads.
Wear layers, waterproof shoes and warm socks because much of the best festive experience is outside.
If you have only one day, choose one main region and one evening trail rather than attempting all the Cotswolds in a single outing.
London to Cotswolds travel takes up a substantial part of the day, and most villages do not have train stations. A train to Oxford or a private driver are both reasonable options depending on budget and preferences.
Frequently Asked Questions
