 ADVICE FOR AMERICAN VISITORS

How Americans can
get to the Cotswolds

Easy access from London, Heathrow & Oxford

Most American visitors travel to the Cotswolds from London or Heathrow Airport, either by car, private transfer or train to Oxford, Charlbury, Kingham or Moreton-in-Marsh.

Trains are a convenient way to reach the region, but exploring its picturesque villages, country houses and hidden gems is another matter. Many of the most beautiful places are several miles apart, with limited public transport between them.

Our local insight: The roads were built for horses and carts, not modern SUVs!

After years of driving the Cotswolds' back roads, we've seen firsthand how challenging the narrow country lanes can be for visitors unfamiliar with rural England. High stone walls, sharp bends, single-track roads and overgrown hedges can make driving surprisingly stressful.

We've witnessed American visitors struggle to negotiate tight lanes, with rental cars ending up scratched by hedges — an expensive lesson when the hire company's insurance excess comes into play.

Popular villages such as Bibury and Bourton-on-the-Water can also become congested with cars and tour coaches, particularly during busy periods.

Our recommendation: If you're confident driving on the left, a manageable-sized hire car offers flexibility. Otherwise, consider a private local driver-guide who knows the quieter back roads, suitable passing places and alternative routes.

Our private Cotswolds tours use premium SUVs, allowing you to relax, enjoy the scenery and leave the driving to someone who knows these roads.

Worried about driving on the 'wrong' side of the road?

Driving on the left hand side of teh road, navigating unfamiliar roundabouts and squeezing through narrow country lanes can be daunting for many American visitors.

Take the train to Oxford or a Cotswolds gateway station, then explore the countryside comfortably with a local driver-guide. No stressful driving, navigation or parking issues.

AMERICAN INTEREST IN COTSWOLDS PROPERTY

The Growing Property Trend

Last Updated: Oct 2026

American interest in the Cotswolds is more than a celebrity trend.According to Savills, North American buyers accounted for 13% of Cotswolds property sales above £1.5 million in 2025, compared with a previous five-year average of just 3.5%.

The attraction goes beyond beautiful country houses. Historic villages, countryside living, traditional pubs, schools and access to London appeal to buyers seeking a different pace of life. Not everyone is relocating permanently.

Some purchased second homes, while others are exploring the possibility of living in Britain.

Our Local Tips

01  The Cotswolds love Dogs! 🐕 🐾

The Cotswolds is wonderfully dog-friendly. You'll find dogs welcome in many country pubs, cafés, shops and hotels. Don't be surprised to see a Labrador curled up beside the fireplace in a traditional English pub!

02  Walk Through the English Countryside 🚶

One of Britain's great traditions is its network of thousands of public footpaths and bridleways, many crossing privately owned farmland and estates. You can explore beautiful countryside without owning the land - just follow the marked paths, respect livestock and close gates behind you.

Our Local View

01  Schools make a big difference

The Cotswolds is a wonderful place to live, but choosing where to buy or stay involves more than finding a beautiful cottage. Some villages are lively and popular with visitors, while others offer greater peace and privacy.

Transport, amenities, schools and access to nearby towns can make a big difference. We share the perspective of people who live and work here, helping visitors understand the places beyond the postcards.

Our Local tips

01  Save Time

Take the train from London to Oxford or Charlbury. You can avoid London traffic and meet a local guide at the station.

02  Save Money

On a budget? A group bus tour is usually cheapest. For families, compare the total cost of train tickets and private transport.

03 Don't rush

Don't try to visit 10 villages in a day. Choose three or four, enjoy a proper pub lunch and leave time for the back roads.
